DCCT was conducted for high blood glucose level
The DCCT was conducted to determine whether high blood glucose levels are responsible for the development of devastating health complications associated with diabetes. The largest, most comprehensive diabetes study ever conducted, the DCCT involved 1,441 volunteers with type 1 diabetes at 29 medical centres in the United States and Canada. Volunteers had diabetes for at least 1 year but no longer than 15 years. They also were required to have no, or only early signs of,diabetic eye disease.Researchers compared intensive insulin therapy, which aimed to keep blood glucose levels as near tonormal as possible, with conventional insulintherapy, which aimed to maintain clinical well being.Intensive therapy involves testing blood glucoselevels four or more times a day, injecting insulin atleast four times a day, following a strict exercise anddiet plan and frequent visits to health professionals.Researchers specifically looked at the effect of eachapproach on the onset and progression ofcomplications. The trial’s dramatic results ledresearchers to end the study one year early. Itsfindings now guide standards of care for diabetesaround the world.
